I felt a bit lonely today in my studio, so I made myself a friend… I like the look of him 😉
The title that came to my mind is “chain of fools” from Aretha Franklin’s song
Je me sentais un peu seule aujourd’hui dans mon atelier, alors je me suis fais un ami… J’aime bien de quoi il a l’air 🙂

After fusion cuisine, here’s fusion jewellery… mixing elements of plants from Western Australia (sandalwood seeds) to plants that have been introduced. I don’t know the name and it probably could be considered as a weed, but I found it really interesting graphically.
I had to rename my project to “100 days 100 necklaces”: I went to Instagram to post my photos and realised that there was already a hashtag for “100 days of necklaces”… so here you go #100days100necklaces
Apres la cuisine fusion, voici la bijouterie fusion… qui mélange des plantes de l’Australie occidentale (les grains de bois de santal) avec des plantes qui ont été introduites ici. Je ne sais pas comment elle s’appelle et c’est probablement considéré comme une « mauvaise herbe » mais je l’ai trouvée intéressante au niveau graphique.
J’ai dû renommer mon projet car le nom que j’utilisai avait déjà un « hashtag » sur Instagram… Vous pouvez donc maintenant me suivre sur #100days100necklaces
The title came to me in French: “atout coeur” which is how you would announce your choice of trump for heart in a card game such as bridge. My personal way of stating how I want to play the game of my life… who wants to play with me?
Le titre m’est venu en français: : « atout cœur »., c’est ainsi que l’on annonce son choix d’atout pour le « cœur » dans un jeu de carte tel que le bridge. Ma façon de dire comment je veux jouer le jeu de ma vie… qui veux jouer avec moi ?
Another busy day… necklace finished and photographed by 3.40pm before going to two meetings late afternoon and evening! And I did manage to fit a walk on the beach at sunset between meetings – a very good day, really!
Une autre journée bien occupée… le collier fini et photographié avant 15h40 avant d’aller à deux réunions en fin d’après-midi et le soir ! Et j’ai même réussi à aller me promener sur la plage au coucher du soleil entre les réunions – un vraiment bonne journée !
This piece was inspired by Otto Kunzli’s 1984 Beauty gallery serie: “Susi, Andrea and Sabine” that I saw recently at the wonderful jewellery exhibition A Fine Possession currently showing at the Powerhouse museum in Sydney until 22 May 2016.
My personal interpretation is that we are “framed” into a certain thinking and behaviour through our familial, social and cultural experiences. Also, our perception of others is “framed” by those same experiences. All my life has been very marked by experiences of absence and death – hence the black colour. Play also had a important role throughout my life, and this symbolised by the red Lego piece. Creating artwork, like this piece, is a form of play.
Mon interprétation personnelle est que nous sommes “cadrés” à penser et à nous comporter d’une certaine manière en fonction de nos expériences familiales, sociales et culturelles. Egalement, notre perception des autres est aussi « cadrée » par ces mêmes expériences. Toute ma vie a été très marquée par des expériences d’absence et de mort – d’où la couleur noire. Le jeu a aussi joué un rôle important tout au long de ma vie, et cela est symbolisé par la pièce de Lego rouge. Créer une œuvre d’art, comme celle-ci, est une forme de jeu.
One of the reasons that motivated me in this project was to finally get to use the collection of materials, found objects, experiments that I have accumulated over the years in boxes thinking: “one day I might do something with this”…. Now I am finally getting into the “doing” part of creativity!
So, in a box was a flat strip of Mokume-gane I had made as part of my studies. Mokume-gane is a Japanese metalworking procedure, which produces a mixed-metal laminate (here sterling silver and copper) with distinctive layered patterns.
One last note about day 9: I have uploaded today a good quality photo.
Une des raisons qui m’a motivé pour ce projet était de pouvoir enfin utiliser la collection de matériaux, objets, expérimentations que j’ai accumulé dans boites depuis des années en pensant : « un jour je ferai quelque chose avec cela »… Donc, dans une boite était une bande plate de Mogume-gane que j’avais fait pendant mes études. Momuke-gane est une technique japonaise de métallurgie qui produit un laminé de plusieurs métaux (ici argent sterling et cuivre) avec des motifs distinctifs en couche.
Sinon au sujet du jour 9, j’ai téléchargé aujourd’hui une photo de bonne qualité. Et au sujet du jour 10, j’ai mis une traduction en français que j’avais oubliée hier 🙂
“Oh, you look good in those pegs!”… That could become my everyday wear and I might start a new trend in fashion 🙂
There is also a conceptual side to this piece, as the title hints. I take the viewpoint that Australia has been “domesticated” through the process of colonisation, with the pegs and fence washers symbolic of the settlers typical house. This is a colonial perspective to say that Australia was wilderness before colonisation and that Aboriginal people were savage. This is far from being true as indigenous people had a very elaborate and caring relationship with the land for more than 40,000 years; for them it was already domesticated.

Il y a aussi un aspect conceptuel à ce collier, comme son titre l’indique : « domestication ». Je prends ici le point de vue que l’Australie a été « domestiqué » ou apprivoisé par le processus de colonisation, avec les pinces à linge et les rondelles de métal des clôtures comme symboles de la maison typique des migrants. Cette une perspective coloniale de dire que l’Australie était sauvage avant la colonisation et que les populations aborigènes étaient des sauvages. C’est bien loin de la vérité car les populations indigènes ont eu une relation très élaborée avec leur environnement depuis plus de 40,000 ans ; pour eux ce continent était déjà domestiqué.
I haven’t found a name for this one yet. It’s a piece of ceramics I found on a beach that has been polished by the ocean. In reality it is not so yellow. I finished late and a better photo will come later.

Je n’ai pas encore trouvé de nom pour ce collier-là. C’est un morceau de céramique que j’ai trouvé sur la plage et qui a été poli par l’océan. En réalité ce n’est pas si jaune. J’ai fini tard et une meilleure photo viendra un autre jour.

Starting the second week, I am finding a pace, after a very full on first week. Now it’s Friday 4pm, very decent time to stop, have a cuppa and a relaxing evening 🙂
Je commence la deuxième semaine, je trouve un rythme, après une première semaine intense. Maintenant on est vendredi, il est 16h, une très bonne heure pour s’arrêter pour une tasse de thé et une soirée de détente 🙂
A French proverb says: “the appetite comes with eating”. I could say today: “creativity comes with making”. I wanted to do something fun and easy after yesterday big day. I found my rock climbing equipment in my garden shed and played with it all morning. I haven’t climbed for the last 10 years, it’s something I did a lot for years (with hiking and skiing), growing up in a family of mountain climbers. It took a while for my hands to remember the knots. I didn’t do any climbing today yet I had a great time experimenting this and that sitting in my garden on a beautiful sunny day.
Le proverbe dit “l’appétit vient en mangeant”. Je pourrais dire aujourd’hui : « la créativité vient en faisant ». Je voulais faire quelque chose d’amusant et facile après la grosse journée d’hier. J’ai trouvé mon équipement d’escalade dans mon abri de jardin et j’ai joué avec toute la matinée. Je n’ai pas escaladé depuis 10 ans, c’est quelque chose que j’ai beaucoup fait pendant des années (avec la randonnée et le ski) car j’ai grandi dans une famille d’alpinistes. Cela a pris un moment pour que mes mains se souviennent des nœuds. Je n’ai pas fait d’escalade aujourd’hui mais j’ai passé un très bon moment à expérimenter ceci et cela, assise dans mon jardin par une belle journée ensoleillée.
