In his painting titled “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”, Magritte demonstrated that the image or the representation of an object is not the object itself. Borrowing his title, I illustrate with this necklace the close relationship between the name of an object and its function. If an object has lost its original function, the one for which it was called a certain name, it cannot be called by that name anymore. This is not a pipe; here are pieces of wood and plastic assembled with other pieces of wood and metal to form a necklace.
Dans son tableau “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”, Magritte démontra qu’une image ou la représentation d’un objet n’est pas l’objet lui-même. En empruntant son titre, j’illustre avec ce collier la relation étroite entre le nom d’un objet et la fonction du dit objet. Si un objet a perdu sa fonction initiale, celle pour laquelle on l’appelle un certain nom, il ne peut plus être appelé par ce nom-là. Ceci n’est pas une pipe ; ici il y a des morceaux de bois et de plastique assemblés avec d’autres morceaux de bois et de métal pour former un collier.
