Recently volunteering as Installation Technician at Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts has given me a great opportunity to see what happens behind the scene before an exhibition opening.
En travaillant récemment bénévolement comme Technicienne d’Installation à l’Institut d’Art Contemporain de Perth (PICA) j’ai eu l’opportunité de voir ce qui se passe dans les coulisses avant un vernissage d’exposition.
The artwork of the previous exhibition goes, new ones arrive… We are preparing for two shows: one of Tracey Moffatt, Kaleidoscope (http://pica.org.au/show/tracey-moffatt/), the other one An Internal Difficulty – Australian artists at the Freud museum London (http://pica.org.au/show/an-internal-difficulty/)
Les œuvres d’art de l’exposition précédente partent, de nouvelles arrivent… Deux expositions sont en préparation (voir liens ci-dessus)
Demount, deinstall, repack, wash, fill in holes, sand, mask with tape, paint, sweep, scrap, etc… Up and down the stairs and the ladder many, many times, litres of water consumed while it’s 35 degres C outside and working in an old brick building with no air conditioning, feeling my muscles aching, thinking “I should do yoga more often” when crouching to paint a skirting board…
Working with a great team of people, fellow artists of all ages and experience, towards a common exciting goal actually made the experience enjoyable and interesting. It’s amazing what can be achieved in one day!
Démonter, désinstaller, remballer, nettoyer, remplir les trous, poncer, masquer avec de l’adhésif, peindre, balayer, gratter, etc… Monter et descendre les escaliers et l’escabeau de nombreuses fois, des litres d’eau consommés pendant qu’il fait 35 degrés dehors et que l’on travaille dans un vieux bâtiment en briques sans climatisation, sentir mes muscles douloureux et penser « je devrais faire du yoga plus souvent » en étant accroupie à peindre une plinthe… L’expérience est rendue plaisante et interessante par le fait de travailler dans une équipe sympa d’artistes de tous âges et expérience. C’est fascinant de voir tout ce qui peut être fait en une journée !

Now is the time to very carefully unpack the artworks and for the two curators to give their instructions for the presentation.
Le temps est venu de très soigneusement déballer les œuvres et pour les deux conservateurs d’art de donner leurs instructions pour la présentation.

The artists come to see they are happy with the way their work is presented. A mad dash to finish everything and… Voilà! ready for the opening.
Les artistes viennent pour voir s’ils sont contents avec la façon dont leur travail est présenté. La course pour tout finir à temps… Voilà! prêt pour le vernissage.
